Beaches & Resorts

Chicken Bone Beach

Chicken Bone Beach is a local historical land site whose name was born out of the block party atmosphere that was created by thousands of vacationing Black families in spite of being segregated to the Missouri Avenue beach. Accompanied by their chicken laden picnic hampers, beach blankets and shore gear, the area became affectionately nicknamed the  "Chicken Bone Beach."  Today, the beach survives as a testament to the indomitable will and values of the Black family and is celebrated through jazz festivals and special events presented by the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation.
