"FRANK TALK," NEW ART BISTRO &
CULTURAL OASIS OPENS IN RED BANK
RED BANK - A new art bistro and book store named after a column written by the late South African Freedom Fighter Steven Biko makes its grand debut in Red Bank, N.J. on November 1.
Frank Talk, which is located at 163 Shrewsbury Avenue, is the borough's newest cultural venue and artistic space destined to engage minds, educate and inspire young writers and artists alike. Walk into this art filled oasis and you will discover literary treasures from around the world and sample an array of art from local artisans. "Bohemian Panes" is an exquisite collection of stained glass renderings that glisten in the large storefront windows. From jewelry designers to wearable art in the form of handbags and pouches, the selection of artistic expression is evident right down to the store's furnishings. Fine art and abstracts are the main attraction on the gallery walls.
Gilda Rogers, the new owner and also author of "Arrested Development: The State of Black Achievement and Education in Hip-Hop America," said she named the art bistro and book store after Biko, because she was inspired by the transforming columns he wrote under the pseudonym, Frank Talk, when she was in college.
"My dream was to create a space where people could come and engage in thought provoking conversation and feast on the wide array of art," said Rogers. The seating is comfortable for reading and the place is bursting with color, style and energy.
Once inside the intimate 700 sq. ft. bistro, Rogers has selected a diverse collection of new and old books celebrating African American culture, women's empowerment, autobiographies and a salute to jazz musicians, along with specialty cards and prints.
"I'd like to think of it as a throwback to writing salons," said Rogers. "Where writers from The Harlem Renaissance gathered to exchange ideas and produced an important canon of Black literature."
Frank Talk will also serve as a vehicle and gathering place for writers to come together to discuss their works and books by prominent authors. Rogers is planning to introduce a writing workshop for those fledgling writers and special programming for the youth. The store will be open from Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it will be closed on Monday through Wednesday to the general public, but open for special community programs.
